A real special man, honest, true, loyal and loved his family and friends. Me and John met in 1985 , on the day he joined Clipstone Pit, we were both Face Fitters at the time, I was asked to take him with me to introduce him to his new pit. Not knowing each other, we both warned each other that we was ex Striking miners who had stuck it out until the end. From that moment we had both gained another brother in an instant. He will be truly missed. Spot on bloke and comrade.

Like many who counted John as a friend, we are finding it difficult to accept that someone we have known for over 50 years is gone. John was one of life's characters and was a highly respected and principled man. He was generous, immensely proud of his family and very loyal to those people and institutions he valued and of course to his football club. Words simply do not express fully the feeling of loss. John was the one who gave me the nickname, Lax. It was one of so many things we did together during our formative years at Kingsway Junior School. From going to Forest together, Cubs, and countless other things he was a big part of my life. He was the one who got me involved in the Labour Party, and we remained friends for life.
